Welcome to the 1-day DSLR Filmmaking Workshop

At FilmCamp’s 1-on-1 Filmmaking Workshop, you make a 1-min film in 1 day using an iPhone. Building on those skills, FilmCamp takes you further with the DSLR Filmmaking Workshop. Welcome to professional-grade filmmaking taught in a day. A hands-on workshop where you learn to work with professional equipment through instruction and practice.

Camera - Setup and operation: You start with learning how to set up a tripod and mount a DSLR camera with its accessories - Base plate, mounting rails, matte box and focus puller. Learn about cameras, sensors, movie settings on DSLR cameras. Navigate the menus yourself. Nikon and Panasonic cameras are featured in the workshop.

Motion Picture Analysis: Introduction to the 6 aspects of a film - script, acting, cinematography, sound, music and editing. Watch a scene from a Hollywood film to understand what happens in professional filmmaking. Learn how framing, composition and camera movement are used to tell a story in motion picture.

Basics of Cinematography: Using prime lenses in cinematography. How does a 20mm lens differ from a 135mm lens? Mount these lenses on Nikon and Panasonic cameras and learn for yourself. Learn to set and pull-focus. Manipulate aperture settings (f-Stop)  to create mood and replicate different times of day during shooting. Learn to use a light meter. Understand the relationship between ISO and aperture settings to create the moving images appropriate for a story. Use ND filters to control exposure when shooting outdoors.

Introduction to Lighting: How light sets the mood for a scene. Learn to work with the latest LED lamps made by Dedolight. Light backgrounds with panel LED lamps. Understanding color temperature. White balancing a camera to create a look that suits the scene. Learn how to use filters on lamps to change the look of a film.

Recording Location Sound: Learn how to record sound and dialogue with a professional Sennheiser microphone attached to a boom pole. Hold a boom pole, record sound and monitor it. How to use Tascam recorders and mixers to get professional-grade sound for a film? Eliminate the expensive process of dubbing by recording location synch sound.

Workflow of a shot: Bring all the above filmmaking topics together in the anatomy of a shot. Picking the right lens for the shot. Staging/Blocking actors and movement. Understand by actually going through the process of shooting and doing it yourself.

Shooting a Scene: Shoot a scene, a collection of shots by applying everything that was taught earlier during the day. A short script will be written, enacted and shot. Go the motions of framing, composition, lighting, setting aperture and ISO, pulling focus and recording sound.

Editing the Scene: Import the footage into a Mac. Edit the shots together using Final Cut Pro. Put together the scene using images and location sound. Understand how the different elements of filmmaking come together to make a film.

Congratulations! In a day, you go through all the aspects of filmmaking by actually doing them. Learn to handle all professional filmmaking equipment by actually getting trained in them. Use them in a scene you shoot and review the results.
